Tips from Burton Morris

q Teachers can be a big influence in your life. Listen to them and your parents. My teachers saw something in me and encouraged my parents to keep pushing. They enrolled me in pre-college art classes, took me to galleries and museums and really immersed me in art.

q Everyone has creativity. And every child has potential. Art builds creativity. Learn as much as about art or what interests you. Make it your passion.

q That old saying - "Practice makes perfect" - is true! I doodle or sketch every day. That's how every painting begins.

q There's no limit to what you can do. Be positive and express yourself and your ideas.

q There is no such thing as "bad" art! Keep exploring and evolving your style. Most of all create for yourself, not to please others. If you do it for somebody else, you'll be restricted. I once created a 15-foot Jolly Green Giant. I still own the painting.

q Color is fascinating. Create something using your favorite color. To really get the creative wheels turning, mix that color with other colors to create different hues. I use primary colors in my work - they are positive and upbeat.
spacer
q Try creating your own characters. Art is a way to express yourself.

q Style is something that is developed. Picasso is a great example of an artist who experimented with style. My style evolved over the years. I had to work on it.
spacer
q When you are starting to draw or paint objects, use shapes before adding the smaller details. It will help to bring it together in the end.
spacer
q Take something you like about art and run with it. The possibilities are endless.
spacer
q If you have the dream, don't ever let it go.
